From the 27th of July to the 12th of August the London Olympic's will be taking place in London, with the 14th set of Paralympic's event's following close behind, starting on the 29th of August. Hotel's near the Olympic venues will cater for both budget and luxury prices, and services offered will vary .
The main venues are all within London located at Lower Lea Valley, and include the following events - The Olympic Stadium (Athletics), Earls Court (Volley Ball), Excel (Boxing, Fencing, Table Tennis, Martial Arts, Weght Lifting, Wrestling), Horse Guard's Parade (Beach Volley Ball), Hyde PArk (Triathlon, 10K Swim), Lords Crickets Stadium (Archery), O2 Arena/Millenium Dome (North Grennwich Area) (Artistic Gymnastic, Trampoline, Basketball), Grennwich Park (Jumping, Dressage, Eventing, Modern Pentathlon, Pentathlon), Regent's Park (Road Cycling), Royal Artilliery Barracks Woolwich (Shooting), University of East London (Waterpolo), Wembley Arena (Badmington, Rhythmic Gymnastics), Wembley Stadium (Football Finals), Wimbledon (Tennis)
The following event's will take place outside of London and are located at Broxbourne (Canoe and Slalom), Dorney/Lake Windsor (Rowing/Canoe Sprint), Hadleigh Farm - Essex (Mountain Biking), Weymouth and Portland (Sailing)
The bidding process to host the games was a mainly 3 choices, London, Manchester and Birmingham, with London being announced as the winner on th 6th of July 2005. The Olympic site is still developing with more announcement's to be made in relation to it's completetion.
Political issues over Tibet and human right's were a concern when the it was first announced the Olypmics were to be held in London as the government might have felt it neccessary to boycott the 2008 beejing Olympics.
An estimated a £4 billion budget was planned by Ken Livingston for construction. His plan was so that less develpoed area's of London would benefit from the new advantages created by hosting the Olympics
The nearest train station is Stratford, the Stadium will hold 80,000 visitors and the Olympic Village will house 18,000 athletes during the time of the Olympics. The British Olympic Assoscitation take resposibilty for Britain partaking in the Olympics, which is a tradition that has been upheld for many years.
In 1908 and 1948 London hosted the Olympics, with the third due in 2012. This will mean that as well as being the only city in the UK to host the Olympics, but also to host the modern Games of three Olympiads . The Uk has never hosted the Winter Olympics.
Scheduled to take place in Rome, the Fourth Modern Olympic Games (held in the Summer of 1908) were held outside of Athens and Greece as well. The eruption of Mount Vesuvius on 7th of April 1906 pressured the Italian Government to restrict funds for the Olympics. there were 22 Nations taking part in 110 Olympic events, and the British team finished with 3x more medal's than the US who finished in second place overall.It was considered the Fourth Olympic Games after the International Olympic Commitee discounted the intercalated '1906 Summer Olympics'.
The games of 1948 were awarded to London in 1939, yet took place in 1948 due to the beginning of World War II. This happened the year of the 50th anniversary of the Modern Olympiad, so in lieu of the Olympics a small celbratory sporting competetion was held in Lausanne.
When the game's evetually returned in 1948, atheletes swarmed to the venue in London from 59 nations to compete in 136 various event's during July and August of that year. Unfortunantly for British Atheletes the medal count was lower than when the UK previously hosted in 1908, with the unofficial medal count putting them in 12th places with only 23 medal's.
